Tall, you picked up on the essential point, as stated officially by thier Brooklyn masters: Elders are untrained and overburdended volunteers.

"if a doctor were to tell you to abstain from alcohol, would that mean simply that you should not take it through your mouth but that you could transfuse it directly into your veins?
if a doctor told a patient to abstain from alcohol then that patient should avoid unhealthy alcohol consumption whether by mouth or any other means.

From the Current New England Journal of Medicine:
God At The Bedside
To the Editor: We agree with Dr. Groopman (March 18 issue) 1 that religious faith may be an essential part of coping with illness and death for many patients and doctors, affecting the quality of life if not medical outcomes. Although many patients raise religious questions with their doctors, 2 doctors can no more be spiritual care experts than they can be experts in all medical specialties.
We, a physician and a chaplain, believe the answer to these dilemmas lies in a partnership between the physician and the professional chaplain. Board-certified chaplains have graduate-level theological and clinical training that enables ...

Fortunately for me, my parents could not be reached when I needed red cells. My loving doctors went to court and obtained an order to give me the blood that saved my life; murderous WTS rules not withstanding.

I wish I knew his real name. I may have crossed paths with him in my distant JW past. There was this one D. O. that I thought may have had a real heart. We talked about a difficult situation and he seemed much more compassionate than any other JW I talked with on the subject.

Your dad will know Dr Starzl; they must be roughly the same age. Starzl is generally regarded as the father of liver transplantation. I believe that he began his transplantation career by doing kidney transplants and then soon became interested in what could be done for patients in hepatic failure. His first liver transplannts were done at the University of Colorado. In about 1980 he moved to the University of Pittsburgh where he remains to this day. The transplant institute there is named in his honor.

Thomas was the first to perform a successful transplant of bone marrow, which he achieved by administering a drug that prevented rejection.
Congratulations, Jeff!
I have been rooting for Thomas E. Starzl to win a Nobel Prize for the work he has done in the transplantation area, but they are not likely to award another prize in so narrowly defined a discipline. Your dad was truly one of the early ones.
